Supporting Victoria Hand Project Work in Ukraine
The Victoria Hand Project (VHP) is a non-profit organization based in Victoria, British Columbia, that aims to improve access to prosthetic care for people in low-resource settings worldwide. Using innovative 3D printing technology, they produce high-quality, affordable prosthetic devices that are customized to the individuals who need them.
VHP partners with local clinics in the countries, often training local technicians to foster a community-driven approach to healthcare, empowering individuals with limb loss to regain mobility and independence.
Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas visited Ukraine in 2019 to prepare for an exhibition at the TSEKH Art Gallery in Kyiv. This trip left a lasting impression, and he made many friends in the region. Unfortunately, the exhibition planned for 2021 never came to fruition due to the war in Ukraine.
To date, MNY has raised $75,000 for Ukraine aid through Unicef and Médesins Sans Frontiers. To continue supporting those impacted by the ongoing conflict, MNY has partnered with the Victoria Hand Project to support their efforts in creating life-changing prosthetics.
With a goal of raising $25,000, the studio is offering limited-edition prints of Kyiv Child for $700 each—the price to cover the cost associated with one prosthetic. These prints are made by Malaspina Printmakers in Vancouver, and thanks to the support of additional supporters and donors, 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the cause.
The Victoria Hand Project has already established two clinics in Ukraine and trained local teams to create and fit prosthetics. In an interview, CEO Michael Peirone noted that the demand for help far outweighs available resources, leaving many individuals to wait up to a year for their prosthetic care. This initiative aims to change that.
